American food in Auckland: Costco runs, NFL on Monday mornings and the Thanksgiving turkey hunt

Drawing for American food in Auckland: the word FOOD, a roast turkey, a football and a shopping cart.
A roast turkey, a football and a shopping cart: a taste of home in Auckland.

Short answer: Auckland is easier on a homesick American stomach than you might expect. There's a Costco, more than ten Taco Bells and Reese's on the supermarket shelf. What takes planning is the specific stuff: canned pumpkin, root beer, a whole turkey in November and a crowd for a Monday-morning NFL game.

The short version

  • Costco's only New Zealand warehouse is in Westgate, West Auckland. Costco New Zealand says its membership card is valid at any Costco warehouse worldwide [1][2].
  • Taco Bell has more than ten Auckland locations, from Shortland Street downtown to Sylvia Park, Botany and the airport [3].
  • When we checked Woolworths' online store on November 7, 2026, it had Reese's and Ocean Spray cranberry sauce, but no canned pumpkin purée, root beer or whole turkey [4].
  • Whole turkeys are mostly a Christmas thing here. Order early from a butcher or plan a turkey breast instead.
  • In November, a Sunday 1 pm ET kickoff lands at 7 am Monday in Auckland.

Costco and the big-box run

Yes, the Costco run survives the move. Costco's warehouse finder lists one New Zealand location: 2 Gunton Drive, Westgate [1]. It's out northwest of the city, so plan on a drive, not a quick errand.

What to know before you go:

  • Your card. Costco New Zealand's member conditions say membership "entitles you to acquire products and services at any Costco location worldwide," and its card is valid at any Costco warehouse worldwide [2]. That's the rule for Kiwi cards; check at the membership desk that your US card works before you load a cart.
  • Kirkland Signature is there, which means familiar brands in familiar sizes.
  • Services listed on Costco's site include a food court, gas station, pharmacy, optical and tires [1].

Costco is also your best shot at bulk American-style snacks, though the range changes. Don't count on any one item being in stock.

What the supermarket has (and doesn't)

New Zealand's big grocery chains will cover most of your week. The names take some getting used to: cilantro is coriander, bell peppers are capsicums, zucchini are courgettes and ground beef is mince. Cookies are biscuits, and what we call biscuits don't really exist.

We searched Woolworths' online store on November 7, 2026 [4]. Here's what turned up:

What you miss What we found
Reese's Yes: peanut butter cups, minis and pieces, for example a 120 g (4.2 oz) share pack at NZD 6 (about USD 3.40)
Cranberry sauce Yes: Ocean Spray whole berry, 275 g (9.7 oz) at NZD 4.79 (about USD 2.70), plus local brands
Canned pumpkin purée No. Only pumpkin soup and fresh butternut
Root beer No. Ginger beer, yes; root beer, no
Whole turkey No. Only whole chickens

So, a few workarounds:

  1. Pumpkin pie means roasting and puréeing a butternut or a local pumpkin yourself. It works fine.
  2. Root beer and specialty snacks are where import shops come in. Small American candy and grocery stores pop up around Auckland and online, but they come and go, so we're not naming any. Ask other Americans in Auckland which ones are open now.
  3. Australian importers are another option. USA Foods, a Melbourne-based American grocery importer, says it delivers Australia-wide and stocks things like Libby's pumpkin and Hidden Valley Ranch [5]. Its site doesn't confirm shipping to New Zealand, so ask before you order.

Fast food that tastes like home

The global chains are all over Auckland, and Taco Bell is the one Americans ask about first. Its New Zealand store locator lists Auckland branches at [3]:

  • Shortland Street, downtown
  • Sylvia Park and Lunn Avenue, Mount Wellington
  • Botany
  • Westgate (handy after a Costco run)
  • Brickworks, New Lynn
  • Northcote and Glenfield Mall on the North Shore
  • Ōtāhuhu and Karaka in the south
  • Auckland Airport

Krispy Kreme New Zealand offers delivery and click and collect "in and around Auckland," with a store finder on its site [6].

Expect differences. Menus are adjusted for local tastes and suppliers, portions can be smaller, and you'll pay GST-inclusive prices with no tip on top. Tipping isn't expected in New Zealand, which takes some of the sting out of the menu prices.

Watching the NFL and NBA from Auckland

New Zealand is a long way ahead of the East Coast. In November, Auckland runs on daylight saving time (NZDT, UTC+13), so it's 18 hours ahead of New York. Here's what that does to game day:

US game US time (ET) Auckland time
NFL Sunday early slate 1 pm Sunday 7 am Monday
NFL Sunday late games 4:25 pm Sunday 10:25 am Monday
Sunday Night Football 8:20 pm Sunday 2:20 pm Monday
Thanksgiving early game 12:30 pm Thursday 6:30 am Friday
NBA 7:30 pm tip-off 7:30 pm 1:30 pm next day

Most weekend NFL action lands on Monday morning, so a lot of Americans here watch at home or at work. The Super Bowl, in February, falls on a Monday around lunchtime in Auckland.

For a bar crowd, sports bars in the Viaduct and downtown are your best bet. The Fox, on Customs Street West in the Viaduct, calls itself a British pub but keeps a live sports schedule, and reviews posted on its site mention booking ahead for NFL games [7]. Whatever bar you pick, call ahead and ask them to put your game on, with sound. Rugby and cricket get the big screens by default.

Getting a Thanksgiving turkey

Thanksgiving falls in late spring here, and the turkey trade is geared to Christmas, when roast turkey and ham are on many Kiwi tables. That's why our November supermarket search came up empty [4].

How Americans in Auckland pull it off:

  1. Order from a butcher by early November. Ask for a whole bird or a boneless turkey roast, and be flexible on size.
  2. Check frozen sections around the city. Supply is patchy in November, so check more than one store.
  3. Go with a turkey breast or crown if a whole bird won't fit your oven. Apartment ovens can be smaller than the one you had back home, so measure before you buy a 6 kg (13 lb) bird.
  4. Make the sides from scratch. Cranberry sauce is easy to find; pumpkin and stuffing mixes are not.
  5. Move it to Saturday. Thursday is a regular workday here, so many families eat on the weekend.

Plenty of Thanksgiving potlucks get organized each year in our community group for Americans in New Zealand, along with tips on which butcher still had a bird.
