American food in Bangkok: burgers, import grocers, the Super Bowl and Thanksgiving turkey
Bangkok has one of the best food scenes on earth, and most days you won't miss home. For the other days, there's a ShackBurger at CentralWorld, peanut butter at Villa Market and a turkey you can order from a hotel.
The short version
- Most big US fast-food and coffee chains are here, and newer arrivals keep coming: Shake Shack opened its first Thai location at CentralWorld in 2023, and Taco Bell has dozens of branches [1][2].
- For American groceries, start with Villa Market, which opened on Sukhumvit Road near Soi 33 in 1974, and Gourmet Market in malls like Emporium, EmQuartier and Siam Paragon [3][4].
- Makro, the membership warehouse store run by CP Axtra, is the nearest thing to a Costco run [5].
- Football here means Monday morning: a 1 p.m. Eastern Sunday kickoff is 1 a.m. Monday in Bangkok in winter, and the Super Bowl starts at breakfast time [10].
- Hotels do Thanksgiving, and some sell whole turkeys to take home. Order early [7].
USD conversions use the Federal Reserve H.10 rate of October 30, 2026 (USD 1 = THB 33.76) [9].
American chains in Bangkok
Walk through any big Bangkok mall and you'll see the burger, fried chicken, pizza, donut and coffee chains you know from home. The menus are localized: expect spicier sauces, rice options and seasonal flavors you'd never see in Ohio.
Two newer arrivals worth knowing:
| Chain | What we checked | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Shake Shack | Launched in Thailand in March 2023; first location opened at CentralWorld on March 30, 2023, with plans for about 15 branches by 2032 [1] | CentralWorld (Ratchaprasong) and newer locations |
| Taco Bell | At least 38 branches in Thailand, most in Bangkok, Pattaya and Chiang Mai [2] | Malls and busy streets across the city |
Chain prices are usually lower than in the US, but not by as much as Thai food is. A burger meal can cost more than three plates of street food, which is a fair trade on a homesick Tuesday.
Groceries: where to find the taste of home
Thai supermarkets stock plenty, but the US brands and cuts live at the import grocers. Expect sticker shock on anything shipped from the States.
The import grocers
| Store | Why Americans go | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Villa Market | Calls itself "Thailand's Original International Supermarket"; wide range of imported goods, meats and organic produce [3] | First store opened in 1974 on Sukhumvit Road just past Soi 33, and it's still open [3]. Email requests for items you can't find [3] |
| Gourmet Market | Upscale supermarket run by The Mall Group [4] | Inside Emporium, EmQuartier, Siam Paragon, Terminal 21 Asok and other malls [4] |
| Central Food Hall | Supermarket at the top of CentralWorld, named in a 2016 expat blog as a holiday shopping stop [8] | Our source is old; check current stock |
| Makro | Membership warehouse store run by CP Axtra (formerly Siam Makro) [5] | Bulk buys, restaurant supplies, big packs of meat |
A 2016 blog post by an American teacher in Bangkok singled out Villa Market's Thong Lo branch for holiday hams and turkeys and Gourmet Market at EmQuartier for imported specialty items, and noted neither is cheap [8]. That's old, but it matches what most Americans here still say.
Shopping tips
- Buy Thai where you can. Local fruit, vegetables, eggs and chicken are cheap and excellent. Save the import aisle for the things that matter to you: the right peanut butter, maple syrup, real cheddar.
- Stock up on spices. Pumpkin pie spice and some baking staples are hard to find before the holidays.
- Bring the light stuff from home. Spice packets, ranch seasoning and boxed mixes fit in a suitcase. Check Thai customs rules for meat and fresh food.
Watching NFL and NBA games
The time difference is the real opponent. Bangkok is on Indochina Time (UTC+7) all year, with no daylight saving time. That puts it 11 hours ahead of New York in US daylight time and 12 hours ahead in US standard time. Our own math:
| Game (Eastern Time) | Bangkok time, Nov to early March | Bangkok time, rest of the season |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday 1:00 p.m. NFL kickoff | Monday 1:00 a.m. | Monday 12:00 a.m. (midnight) |
| Sunday 4:25 p.m. NFL kickoff | Monday 4:25 a.m. | Monday 3:25 a.m. |
| Sunday Night Football, 8:20 p.m. | Monday 8:20 a.m. | Monday 7:20 a.m. |
| NBA game, 7:30 p.m. | 7:30 a.m. next day | 6:30 a.m. next day |
So the most watchable games are Sunday and Monday night games, which land on Monday and Tuesday mornings. Sports bars in tourist and expat areas like Sukhumvit show big games, but schedules change by the season, so check a bar's social media before you set an alarm.
The Super Bowl breakfast
The Super Bowl is the one game the community turns out for. In 2026, AMCHAM Thailand (the American Chamber of Commerce) and JUSMAG, the US military assistance group in Thailand, hosted a free watch party at JUSMAG's Golden Teak House near MRT Lumphini on Monday, February 9, from 6 a.m. to noon, with breakfast and a bar at your own cost [10]. Watch AMCHAM's events page in January for the next one.
Thanksgiving in Bangkok
Thanksgiving is a normal workday in Thailand, so most Americans celebrate on the weekend before or after.
Eating out
Big hotels in Bangkok often run Thanksgiving buffets or set menus. In 2021, for example, Time Out Bangkok listed nine hotel restaurants serving Thanksgiving meals, from about THB 1,000 to THB 3,000 a person (about USD 30 to 90) [6]. That list is five years old, so menus, venues and prices will have changed; look for announcements from early November.
Turkey to go
If you'd rather host, several hotels sell whole roast turkeys with the trimmings. For example, Anantara Siam Bangkok offered a take-home Thanksgiving menu from November 7 to December 31, 2025 [7]:
| Item (2025) | Price | About USD |
|---|---|---|
| Whole turkey set | THB 8,500++ | 252 |
| Honey-glazed ham set | THB 1,900++ | 56 |
| Pecan pie set | THB 1,250++ | 37 |
The "++" means service charge and tax go on top, and orders needed 48 hours' notice [7]. Those are 2025 prices, so expect changes this year.
Doing it all yourself
Raw turkeys show up at import grocers in November and December, and the 2016 blog mentioned hams and turkeys at Villa Market [8]. Two things to know:
- Check your oven. Many Bangkok condo kitchens have a small countertop oven or none at all. Measure before you buy a 12-pound bird.
- Order early. Ask the store in October when its frozen turkeys arrive and whether you can reserve one.
