Schools in Bangkok: American and international schools, fees and the road to US college
Bangkok has plenty of international schools, a couple with real American roots, and fees that rival a private school back home. Start early, because the popular grades fill up.
The short version
- Most American families use international schools. International School Bangkok (ISB) began in 1951 on the grounds of the US Embassy and is the American-style option most people know [1].
- Tuition at top schools runs about THB 500,000 to 1,200,000 a year (about USD 15,000 to 35,500) in 2026/27, plus one-time entry fees of THB 200,000 to 260,000 (about USD 5,900 to 7,700) [2][3].
- The school year runs August to June, much like the US calendar [3].
- Thai public schools teach in Thai. They're a real option only for younger kids or families planning to stay long term.
- US college applications work fine from Bangkok. Counselors at the big international schools handle them every year.
USD conversions use the Federal Reserve H.10 rate of October 30, 2026 (USD 1 = THB 33.76) [7].
The main international schools
There are dozens of international schools in and around Bangkok, licensed by the Thai Ministry of Education. These four come up again and again with American families. We've only listed fees we could check on the school's own site.
International School Bangkok (ISB)
ISB opened in 1951 as the International Children's Center on the US Embassy grounds, moved to Sukhumvit Soi 15 in 1960 and has been on a 37-acre campus in the gated Nichada Thani community in Pak Kret, Nonthaburi, since 1992 [1]. It's a PK–12 American-style school, accredited by WASC (the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the same body that accredits schools in California), and was the first school in Thailand to offer the IB Diploma [1].
The catch is the commute: Nichada Thani is north of the city, and many ISB families live inside or near the community rather than in central Bangkok.
Ruamrudee International School (RIS)
RIS was founded in 1957 and switched from the British to the American system in 1966 [4]. It offers a college-prep American curriculum with a US-style high school diploma and has been authorized for the IB Diploma since 1998 [4]. It's WASC-accredited and sits on a suburban campus at Ramkhamhaeng 184 in Min Buri, in eastern Bangkok [4]. We couldn't open RIS's own fee schedule, so ask admissions for the current year's fees.
NIST International School
NIST opened in 1992 on ISB's old Sukhumvit Soi 15 campus, near Asok BTS station, with United Nations support [5]. It's a not-for-profit IB World School running all three IB programs (PYP, MYP and the Diploma) from nursery through grade 12, governed by a foundation whose members are elected by parents [5]. It's the central-city option for families who want to live on Sukhumvit. NIST doesn't publish a fee table online; its admissions office sends it on request [6].
Bangkok Patana School
Bangkok Patana was founded in 1957 and follows the English National Curriculum through the IGCSE exams at 16, then the IB Diploma in Years 12 and 13 [8]. It's in Bang Na district, on La Salle Road (Sukhumvit 105) [8]. It's a common choice for American families who are fine with "Year 7" instead of "sixth grade". Its 2026/27 fee announcement is public [3].

The extras add up:
- ISB charges a non-refundable application fee of THB 4,700 (about USD 140) and an annual fee of THB 22,000 (about USD 650) [2].
- Bangkok Patana charges an application fee of THB 4,000, rising to THB 5,500 from August 1, 2026 (about USD 120 to 160), and a capital assessment fee of THB 30,000 (about USD 890) a year [3].
- Everywhere: buses, lunches, uniforms, trips and exam fees.
If your employer pays tuition, read the package closely. Some cover tuition only and leave the entry fee to you, and that can be the size of a used car.
Admissions: how it works
- Start six to twelve months out. Popular grades fill up, especially in early childhood.
- Apply online and pay the application fee.
- Send records. Report cards for the last two years, teacher recommendations and, for some grades, standardized test results.
- Testing or interview. Most schools assess English and math, and some check whether a child needs language or learning support.
- Pay the entry fee to hold the seat. It's usually non-refundable [2][3].
Bring your child's passport, any IEP or 504 plan from your US school district and vaccination records. If your child was born abroad, get their CRBA and US passport first; schools ask for the passport for visa paperwork.
Thai schools
Thai public schools teach in Thai, follow the Thai national curriculum and are built around Thai students. Some private Thai schools run English Program or bilingual tracks for part of the day.
That can work well for young children and families married into Thailand who plan to stay. For older kids coming from a US school, the language jump is steep, and getting back into a US high school track later takes planning.
US college from Bangkok
Applying to US colleges from Bangkok isn't much different from applying from Boston. International school counselors work with the Common App every year, and many US universities visit Bangkok schools.
Things to know:
- Your child is a US citizen, not an international applicant. They apply as a domestic student for admissions and federal aid, even with a foreign address.
- FAFSA still applies. Your Thai income goes on the form. Use your US tax return figures.
- In-state tuition is another story. Each state sets its own residency rules, and many treat a family that's lived abroad for years as out of state. Keeping a home, a driver's license and state tax ties can matter; check the specific state's rules early.
- IB and AP both work. US colleges know both. ISB and RIS students can take the IB Diploma [1][4].
- Testing. SAT and ACT dates are offered internationally; ask your school counselor where the nearest test center is.
Choosing where to live and where to learn
In Bangkok, picking a school and picking a neighborhood are the same decision. Traffic means a 15 km (9 mile) ride can take an hour at rush hour. Families at ISB tend to cluster around Nichada Thani; NIST families live along Sukhumvit near the BTS; Patana and RIS families often live in the eastern suburbs. Our guide to renting in Bangkok covers the neighborhoods.
