UK universities for American students: UCAS, fees, visas and federal loans
You apply to up to five UK courses through one UCAS form, you pay international fees unless you've settled here, and you can still use US federal Direct Loans at many UK universities, but not Pell Grants.
The short version
- One application, five choices. UCAS handles undergraduate applications. For 2027 entry, the deadline for most courses is January 13, 2027, and October 15, 2026, for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses [1].
- You'll usually pay international fees, set by each university and much higher than what British students pay. Check the course page for the exact figure.
- The Student visa costs £558 (about USD 750), plus the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 a year (about USD 1,040) [2][3].
- Federal loans can follow you. Direct Subsidized, Unsubsidized and PLUS loans work at eligible foreign schools; grants such as the Pell Grant don't [4].
- New loan limits since July 1, 2026: Grad PLUS is gone for new borrowers, and Parent PLUS is capped at $20,000 a year per student [5].
How a UK degree differs from college back home
The biggest surprise for American families is how focused UK degrees are. You apply to study one subject, such as history, economics or physics, from day one. There's no "undeclared," and few general education requirements.
| US college | UK university (England) | |
|---|---|---|
| Length of a bachelor's | Usually 4 years | Usually 3 years (4 in Scotland) |
| What you apply for | The school | A specific course at the school |
| Application | Common App and school essays | One UCAS application and one personal statement |
| Choices | As many as you like | Up to 5 [1] |
| Standardized tests | Depends on the school | Universities set their own entry requirements for US applicants, often using AP scores, SAT or ACT, and your high school diploma |
| Campus life | Dorms, Greek life, college sports | Halls in first year, student societies, much less emphasis on varsity sports |
A three-year degree means one less year of tuition and living costs, which can close a lot of the price gap with a US school. Master's degrees in the UK are often just one year.
Applying through UCAS
Key dates for 2027 entry
| Date (6 p.m. UK time) | What happens |
|---|---|
| October 15, 2026 | Equal consideration date for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses [1] |
| January 13, 2027 | Equal consideration date for most undergraduate courses [1] |
| June 30, 2027 | Last date for applications to go to universities; after this, applications go into Clearing [1] |
| September 23, 2027 | Final date for 2027 entry applications [1] |
You can have five choices in total, and you can add choices with a later deadline afterward, as long as you stay within five [1]. UCAS notes that many universities keep accepting international applicants later in the cycle, closer to the course start, so check each university's own deadline [1].
Step by step
- Shortlist courses, not schools. Read each course's entry requirements for US applicants. Most UK universities publish what they want from American students, such as a mix of AP scores, SAT or ACT results and your GPA.
- Talk to your high school counselor early. Your UCAS application needs a reference, usually from a teacher or counselor, and predicted grades or scores where they apply.
- Write one personal statement for all five choices. It's about the subject, not about you as a person. That's a big shift from Common App essays.
- Submit by the right deadline. Oxbridge and medicine applicants need to be ready by mid-October of senior year, which means starting in the summer.
- Prepare for interviews or admissions tests if your course requires them.
- Accept your offers as firm and insurance choices once decisions come in.
What it costs
Tuition
Each university sets its own international fees, and they vary widely by subject: lab-based and clinical courses cost more than humanities. We won't quote averages here, because the only reliable figure is the one on your course page. Budget for international fees rising each year of the degree.
If you've lived in the UK for some years with indefinite leave to remain or another settled status, you may qualify for "home" fee status instead. The rules are detailed, so ask each university's admissions team.
Visa, health surcharge and living costs
| Cost | Amount (2026) | About |
|---|---|---|
| Student visa from outside the UK | £558 | USD 750 [2] |
| Immigration Health Surcharge, students | £776 per year of visa | USD 1,040 [3] |
| Living-cost requirement, London | £1,529 a month for up to 9 months | USD 2,050 [6] |
| Living-cost requirement, outside London | £1,171 a month for up to 9 months | USD 1,570 [6] |
The health surcharge gives you access to the NHS, the UK's public health service, during your studies.
The Student visa in brief
You need an offer from a licensed student sponsor. The earliest you can apply is 6 months before your course starts, and you'll usually get a decision within 3 weeks if you apply from outside the UK [2].
Here's a perk for Americans: the US is on the list of countries whose nationals usually don't have to submit proof of funds with their application, though UK Visas and Immigration can ask for it before deciding, so keep the evidence ready [6]. Otherwise, you'd need to show the money in your account for 28 days in a row [6].
After graduating, you may be able to switch to a Graduate visa: 2 years if you apply by December 31, 2026, and 18 months for applications from January 1, 2027. Doctoral graduates can get 3 years [2].
Using US federal student aid at a UK university
Yes, you file the FAFSA even for a school in London. The Department of Education lets eligible foreign schools take part in the Direct Loan Program [4].
What you can and can't get
- Available: Direct Subsidized Loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loans and PLUS loans [4].
- Not available: any federal grant, including Pell Grants [4].
- Your program must be at least one year long, lead to a degree or other recognized credential, and not be taught by distance learning, even in part [4].
- You must be a US citizen or eligible noncitizen, enrolled at least half time, making satisfactory academic progress, and registered with Selective Service if that applies to you [4].
Check the school's status with the FAFSA school search by choosing "foreign country." A school marked "Eligible" can award new federal loans. "Deferment Only" schools let you defer existing loans but not borrow new ones [4].
Loan limits after July 1, 2026
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act changed federal loan limits for new borrowers from July 1, 2026 [5]:
| Borrower | Annual limit | Aggregate limit |
|---|---|---|
| Dependent undergraduate | $5,500 / $6,500 / $7,500 (years 1 / 2 / 3+) | $31,000 |
| Independent undergraduate | $9,500 / $10,500 / $12,500 | $57,500 |
| Graduate student | $20,500 Unsubsidized | $100,000 |
| Professional student | $50,000 Unsubsidized | $200,000 |
| Parent PLUS | $20,000 per dependent student | $65,000 per student |
| Grad PLUS | Eliminated for new borrowers |
Students who were already enrolled and had a Direct Loan for their program before July 1, 2026, keep the older limits for their expected time to finish [5]. The Department of Education also notes that foreign schools in the Direct Loan Program may not award the increased Unsubsidized amounts available to some health professions students [5].
For many Americans paying international fees, these limits won't cover the full bill, so plan for savings, scholarships or private loans for the gap.
529 plans and tax credits
Your 529 plan can work too. The IRS defines an eligible educational institution to include certain schools outside the United States that are eligible for US Department of Education student aid programs [7]. That's the same test that lets a UK school offer Direct Loans, so a school on the FAFSA list is a good first sign. A US expat tax preparer can check whether the American opportunity credit also applies to your situation.
Living in London as a student
London universities include UCL, King's College London, Imperial College London, the London School of Economics and Queen Mary, among others. First-year students usually live in university halls. London is the priciest place in the UK to study, which is why the visa living-cost figure is higher here [6].
A few US-side reminders: Uncle Sam still wants a tax return if your income crosses the filing threshold, a part-time job's UK bank account counts toward the FBAR, and you should register to vote absentee through FVAP before the next federal election.
