American food in Madrid: US groceries, Costco runs, NFL bars and how to pull off Thanksgiving

Updated 2026-11-06 · 6 min read

Drawing for American food in Madrid: the word FOOD, a burger, an American football and a pumpkin pie.
A burger, a football and a pumpkin pie: three things Americans hunt for in Madrid.

Madrid is one of the great eating cities of the world, and after a few months of jamón, croquetas and late dinners, you might not miss home cooking much. Then November rolls around, or the playoffs start, or your kid asks for mac and cheese, and suddenly you need to know where the American stuff is. Here's our map.

The short version

  • US groceries: Taste of America has a store at Calle Serrano 149 and sells online across Spain [1].
  • Costco: the Madrid region has two warehouses, in Getafe and Las Rozas. Membership was EUR 30 plus VAT a year for individuals in early 2026 [2].
  • NFL: Madrid's official tourism site lists NFL Madrid Bar at Calle Laurel 4, which shows NFL games and the Super Bowl [3].
  • Burgers, ribs and pancakes: a 2025 roundup lists spots like Burmet, Madhattan and La Desayunería; older favorites include Alfredo's Barbacoa [4][5].
  • Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 26, 2026 is a regular workday in Spain. Order a whole turkey from a butcher early, or book a restaurant menu [6][7].

USD conversions in this guide use the Federal Reserve H.10 rate of October 30, 2026: USD 1.1163 per euro.

US groceries: where to find a taste of home

Spanish supermarkets are great for produce, olive oil, cheese and anything from the sea. They're weaker on boxed mac and cheese, root beer, canned pumpkin, graham crackers and the specific peanut butter your family is loyal to.

Where What it's good for
Taste of America, Calle Serrano 149 (Chamartín) US brands: cake mixes, salad dressings, snacks, cookies, sodas and breakfast stuff; also ships within Spain [1]
Costco Getafe, Calle Agustín de Betancourt 17 Bulk shopping, Kirkland products, some US brands [2]
Costco Las Rozas, Calle Innovación 19 Same, on the northwest side [2]
Big Spanish supermarkets and department store food halls A small international aisle, varying by branch

The tourism office's listing for Taste of America on Serrano was last updated in 2023, so check hours before you make the trip [1].

The Costco run

Yes, there's a Costco, and yes, it feels like a little piece of the suburbs. The Getafe warehouse is south of the city in the Los Gavilanes business park, and Las Rozas is northwest, handy if you live in Pozuelo, Aravaca or Majadahonda [2]. When we checked a January 2026 report, an individual membership cost EUR 30 (about USD 33.49) plus VAT a year, and you had to be 18 or older [2]. Bring your US membership card: Costco memberships generally work at warehouses abroad, but ask at the desk to be sure.

You'll need a car to haul anything home, which is one more reason Madrid's Costcos are a suburban thing. Our transport guide covers driving here on a US license.

Swaps that save you money

Imports carry sticker shock, so a few local stand-ins help:

  • Pumpkin: calabaza is sold all fall at markets and works for pie if you roast and purée it.
  • Brown sugar: look for azúcar moreno.
  • Baking soda: bicarbonato sódico, often in the pharmacy-style aisle.
  • Ground beef for burgers: ask a butcher for carne picada de ternera, and tell them how lean you want it.
  • Measuring cups: Spanish recipes use grams. Bring your cups from home or buy a kitchen scale.

Burgers, barbecue, brunch and diners

Madrid went through a big burger boom, and American-style food is now easy to find. These are places we found in recent guides and listings. Restaurants come and go, so check before you go:

Burgers and ribs

  • Burmet: burgers, ribs and slow-cooked meats, with branches on Calle Luis Vives 9, Paseo de los Olmos 13 and Calle Ferraz 77 (per a January 2025 roundup) [4].
  • Madhattan: New York-inspired, with pulled pork, burgers and onion rings, on Calle Porvenir 16 and Calle Sánchez Pacheco 48 [4].
  • Alright: ribs, Tex-Mex and burgers, on Calle Pedro Rico 41 and Calle López de Hoyos 8 [4].
  • New York Burger, Calle de Recoletos 4: charcoal-oven burgers and smoked meats, listed by Madrid's tourism office (listing last updated 2021) [8].
  • Alfredo's Barbacoa, Calle Lagasca 5: an American-themed burger bar with country music that Time Out described as a decades-old institution, though that review dates from 2014 [5].

Pancakes and brunch

  • La Desayunería: American-style breakfast and brunch, known for pancakes, with locations on Calle Barbieri 4 (Chueca), Paseo de la Castellana 259 and Calle Ayala 46 [4].
  • Watts Cantina, Calle de Don Pedro 4 in La Latina: a diner-style café with pancakes and specialty coffee [4].

Brunch in Madrid tends to run late, like everything else. Showing up at 9 a.m. on a Sunday will get you an empty room.

Where to watch the NFL, NBA and Super Bowl

Time zones are the big challenge. Madrid is six hours ahead of New York most of the year, so the Sunday 1 p.m. Eastern games start at 7 p.m. here, and Sunday Night Football kicks off around 2:20 a.m. The Super Bowl means a very late night or a sick day.

  • NFL Madrid Bar, Calle Laurel 4: Madrid's official tourism site describes it as American-style, showing NFL games and the annual Super Bowl [3].
  • Sports bars and Irish pubs around the center show soccer above all, but many will switch a screen to an NFL or NBA game if you ask early and it's not a Real Madrid or Atlético night. The tourism office lists options like 38 Sport Pub on Calle Preciados and Sports Pub Madrid, with several central locations [3].
Game slot (US Eastern) Madrid time
Sunday 1 p.m. 7 p.m.
Sunday 4:25 p.m. 10:25 p.m.
Sunday Night Football about 2:20 a.m. Monday

For a few weeks each spring and fall, when the US and Europe change clocks on different dates, the gap is five hours instead of six. Check the start time those weeks.

Thanksgiving in Madrid

Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26. It's a regular workday in Spain, so most Americans here celebrate on the weekend. Black Friday, on the other hand, has caught on here in a big way [7].

Getting the bird

Turkey (pavo) isn't a Spanish holiday staple, so you need a plan:

  1. Order early from a butcher (carnicería) or poultry shop (pollería). Ask for a pavo entero at least a week or two ahead, give a weight in kilos (about 2.2 pounds per kilo), and ask them to clean it.
  2. Check your oven. Many Madrid apartment ovens are small. Measure before you order a big bird, or go for a turkey breast.
  3. Consider ready-made. IFEMA's Thanksgiving guide notes that the Spanish company Cascajares sells an American-style roast turkey ready to heat, with cranberry sauce and pumpkin purée [7].
  4. Stock up on the extras early. US-food shops stock canned pumpkin, cranberry sauce and other holiday basics, but don't leave it to Thanksgiving week [1][7].

Or let someone else cook

Hotels and restaurants put on Thanksgiving menus most years. In 2023, Time Out listed turkey menus at places like El Taller del Lago in Casa de Campo, Hotel InterContinental on the Castellana and Rubaiyat, with prices from about EUR 55 to EUR 75 (about USD 61 to USD 84) per person, drinks included [6]. Menus and prices change every year, so treat that as a ballpark and book early.

The best Thanksgivings here, though, tend to be potlucks. Find out who's hosting through our community group for Americans in Spain, and bring the green bean casserole.
