Sports in Sydney: rugby league, AFL, cricket and where to catch the NFL

Drawing for Sports in Sydney: the word FOOTY, an oval football, a cricket bat and a baseball.
An oval ball, a cricket bat and a baseball: Sydney's sports year.

Pick an NRL team by your neighborhood, see the Swans at the SCG, spend a summer evening at the cricket, and set an alarm: Sunday NFL kicks off Monday morning in Sydney.

The short version

  • Rugby league (NRL) is Sydney's main winter sport, with nine of the league's 17 clubs based in Sydney or nearby [1].
  • Australian rules football (AFL) has two Sydney teams, the Sydney Swans and the GWS Giants [2][3].
  • Summer is cricket season: Test matches, one-day games and the Big Bash League's T20 nights.
  • Baseball exists here. The Sydney Blue Sox play in the Australian Baseball League in summer, out in Western Sydney [4].
  • The NFL played its first regular-season game in Australia in September 2026, Rams vs. 49ers at the MCG in Melbourne [5][6].
  • US games air in the morning. From November to mid-March, Sydney is 16 hours ahead of New York [7].

Which "football"? A quick decoder

Australians call several different games "footy," and which one they mean depends on where they grew up. In Sydney, footy usually means rugby league.

Code Pro league Sydney teams Season What it looks like to an American
Rugby league NRL Nine Sydney-area clubs March to early October Tackle, six tackles a set, then you kick. Brutal and fast
Australian rules AFL Swans, GWS Giants March to September Huge oval field, kicking and high marks, nonstop running
Rugby union Super Rugby NSW Waratahs February to June 15 per side, scrums, lineouts, longer phases
Soccer A-League Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers October to May What you know as soccer

Rugby league: pick a team by ZIP code

The NRL is to Sydney what the NFL is to Texas. Of the league's 17 clubs, the Sydney-area teams are the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, Parramatta Eels, Penrith Panthers, South Sydney Rabbitohs, St. George Illawarra Dragons, Sydney Roosters and Wests Tigers [1].

Loyalties are mostly local, so the easy rule for newcomers is to follow the team from where you live:

  • Eastern suburbs (Bondi, Paddington): Roosters
  • Inner south (Redfern, Mascot): Rabbitohs
  • Northern beaches: Sea Eagles
  • Sutherland Shire: Sharks
  • Western Sydney: Eels, Panthers or Bulldogs, depending on how far west

The big events are State of Origin in winter, a three-game series between New South Wales and Queensland that brings the city to a halt, and the NRL Grand Final in early October. Think of Origin as the closest thing Australia has to Thanksgiving Day football plus a state rivalry.

Tickets for regular-season games are easy to get and cheap by US standards. Club memberships, the local version of season tickets, give you a seat, priority for finals and a scarf you'll actually wear in July.

AFL: the Swans and the Giants

Australian rules football is Melbourne's religion, but Sydney has two teams:

  • Sydney Swans: the city's AFL club since the 1980s, playing home games at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in Moore Park. Memberships for 2027 are already on sale [2].
  • GWS Giants: the newer club, based at Sydney Olympic Park, with some home games in Canberra. They sell 2027 memberships through Ticketmaster [3].

AFL is the easiest code for Americans to enjoy live. The scoring is simple (six points for a goal, one for a "behind"), the action never stops, and the crowd will happily explain it. The Swans also field a women's team in the AFLW, which plays its finals in the spring [2].

The AFL Grand Final is played at the MCG in Melbourne in late September. It's the closest thing to the Super Bowl here, minus the commercials.

Cricket: a summer at the SCG

Cricket takes over when the footy ends. The SCG hosts a Test match most summers, traditionally in the first week of January, and a day at the Test is a very Sydney way to spend a vacation day. Bring a hat (see our sun-safety guide), expect lunch and tea breaks, and don't be in a rush.

For a quicker fix, the Big Bash League (BBL) is T20 cricket: about three hours, night games, fireworks and music, the most American-feeling version of the sport. Sydney has two teams, the Sixers and the Thunder, and both sell BBL tickets through Ticketmaster, with early-bird discounts on some games [8].

If you like baseball, you'll pick up cricket faster than you expect. A "wicket" is an out, a "six" is a home run that clears the rope on the fly, and a Test match can run for five full days.

Baseball: the Sydney Blue Sox

Missing ballpark hot dogs? The Sydney Blue Sox play in the Australian Baseball League, which runs in the Australian summer, when MLB is in its offseason [4].

  • Ballpark: Blue Sox Stadium at Blacktown International Sportspark, Eastern Road, Rooty Hill [4].
  • Getting there: Rooty Hill station, then about a 20-minute walk, or bus 728 from Blacktown or Mt Druitt. Driving, take the M2, M4 or M7 and park at Gate A [4].
  • Tickets: online or at the gate; buying online is cheaper. There's no ATM on site, so bring a card [4].

It's small-crowd, family-friendly baseball with a few MLB prospects mixed in, and a good spot to meet other Americans who miss their home ballpark.

The NFL in Australia

The NFL has started playing real games here. The Los Angeles Rams were named the designated home team for the first NFL regular-season game in Australia, played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2026 under a multi-year deal with the Victorian Government [5]. The opponent was the San Francisco 49ers, in Week 1 of the 2026 season, and the MCG holds about 100,000 people [6][9]. Reports said the game sold out in about 30 minutes [9].

Melbourne is about 880 km (550 miles) from Sydney by road, or roughly a 90-minute flight, so if the NFL returns in 2027, it's a manageable trip. Watch the NFL's announcements for future dates; there's no game in Sydney.

What time US games air in Sydney

Sydney runs on daylight saving time from October 4, 2026, to April 4, 2027, which shifts the gap with the States twice a year [7].

US game US time (ET) Sydney time, November to mid-March
NFL Sunday early games 1:00 p.m. Sunday 5:00 a.m. Monday
NFL Sunday late games 4:25 p.m. Sunday 8:25 a.m. Monday
Sunday Night Football 8:20 p.m. Sunday 12:20 p.m. Monday
Monday Night Football 8:15 p.m. Monday 12:15 p.m. Tuesday
NBA evening games 7:30 p.m. 11:30 a.m. next day
Super Bowl Early evening Sunday Late morning Monday

From April to early October, when Sydney is on standard time and the US is on daylight time, Sydney is 14 hours ahead of New York: a 7:05 p.m. ET MLB first pitch is 9:05 a.m. the next morning [7].

So Super Bowl Monday is a workday here. Many Americans book a vacation day, and sports bars around the city open early for big US games. Streaming is the other route: the NFL, NBA and MLB all sell international subscription packages, and local sports streaming services carry some US games. Check what your US streaming subscriptions show from Australia before you cancel them.

Buying tickets, Aussie style

  1. Find the official club or league site. NRL, AFL, BBL and ABL clubs all sell directly, mostly through Ticketmaster or Ticketek.
  2. Consider a membership if you'll go to more than a few games. It's the season ticket equivalent and often includes finals priority.
  3. Use public transport. Big Sydney venues are well served by trains and light rail, and parking near the SCG or Olympic Park on game day is a headache.
